One of the most humble and respected individuals from Kaua‘i High School’s class of 1999 is Micah Smith.
If you ask anyone who knows Smith, the overwhelming consensus is the fact that there’s absolutely nothing bad that you can say about him. Not only was he one of the nicest individuals you’ll ever meet, he’s also the type of person that would give something up from himself, just to make you happy.
Following a great run on the basketball court, where he could jump out of any of the island’s three public high school gyms, Smith also made a name for himself on the track and on the volleyball court.
Born and raised on Kaua‘i, Smith was also a talented musician in Kaua‘i High School’s famous band, led by the legendary, Larry McIntosh. For Smith, hard work and success on the athletic field or in the band room was just the start. The Lihu‘e resident maintained a very high GPA, that led him to Lock Haven University in Pennsylvania, where his father was a professor and his brother was a student. Smith also continued to run track at the collegiate level at the Pennsylvania school.
After a highly successful undergraduate experience, Smith decided to further his education and applied to law school. After acing the LSAT (the law version of the SAT), Smith applied and got accepted to one of the most prestigious school’s in the country, Harvard.
Talking to him during his summer break at the Kaua‘i Athletic Club, Smith expressed that he wants to become a college professor, just like his dad, but instead of teaching sociology, Smith wants to teach law.
“I want to get a doctorate degree and teach on the mainland, I love it up there because there’s lots of opportunities,” Smith said. Smith’s younger brother, Jonathan, a 2004 Kaua‘i High School graduate is going to attend the University of Virginia this fall, which breaks the tradition of Smith brothers at Lock Haven University (Luke, the oldest Smith also went to Lock Haven). However, much like anything else for Micah, it’s no big deal because he respects his brother’s decision and will guide him, just like an older brother should.
