If you like to watch exciting, talented youth baseball players at their best, then mark your calendars for Wednesday, June 30 at Hanapepe Ballpark, as the best of three series kicks off showcasing West Kaua‘i’s best against Lihu‘e’s finest. The showdown starts at 4:30 p.m.
Then on Saturday, July 3, the series shifts to the Lihu‘e County Park Mustang field, located near the former police station.
Saturday’s first pitch depends on the outcome of the bronco game, whereas the mustang contest usually ends up following the bronco match-up.
The games might change though, because of the idle time that may take some time, but league officials are trying to figure out a way to alter the format, which would enable the mustang all-stars to start its games after the completion of the first bronco all-star contest.
The Lihu‘e mustang all-stars, coached by Dean Oshiro will try to snap a trend of dominance by the West Kaua‘i Youth Baseball mustang all-stars.
The WKYBL mustang’s have never lost a playoff series to their Lihu‘e foes. In the meantime, the West Kaua‘i mustang all-stars, coached by Kirk Correa have instilled a new season schedule, in which the games ended just about a little over a week ago, which could hurt or help the mustangs from the westside.
“We decided as a league (WKYBL) to have the season go almost right up until the tournament and we think that this will enable the players to keep their edge going into the playoffs,” WKYBL president Paul Pancho said.
The winner of the mustang division will participate in the state tournament in Hilo from July 15-19. The state champs will head to Irvine, Texas for the World Series from August 4-10.
