2004 Richard M. Doi Scholarship winners
Michael Ishibashi and Sara Nonaka are the 2004 Richard M. Doi Scholarship winners.
Ishibashi is the son of David and Janice Ishibashi of Kalaheo. He earned a 3.8 GPA and lettered in baseball (4), volleyball (3), cross-country (3), bowling (1), and soccer (1). Ishibashi was a KIF all-star for baseball and volleyball. He will be attending the University of Colorado and plans to enlist as an officer in the Marine Corp after college.
Nonaka is the daughter of Russell and Christine Nonaka of Hanapepe. She finished with a 4.063 GPA and lettered in tennis (4). Nonaka was team captain for two years and was a state qualifier in tennis in 2003 and 2004. Nonaka will be attending the University of Colorado and plans to study civil engineering.
The 2004 Richard M. Doi Scholarships are awarded to a senior male and female athletes who exemplify the Menehune spirit of good character, discipline, loyalty, and commitment.
Po‘okela, Ho‘oikaika volleyball off to Reno
Kaua‘i volleyball clubs, Po‘okela and Ho‘oikaika are both traveling to Reno for the 2004 Volleyball Festival, which is the biggest women’s sporting event in the nation.
Originating in Sacramento, the festival hosts girls of all ages from June 26 through July 2. Both Po‘okela and Ho‘oikaika have been doing fundraising to attend the event, along with help from their families.
Hamilton up for various national awards
Kaua‘i’s Bethany Hamilton is up for two awards in the 2004 Teen Choice Awards, one for fresh face and one for female athlete. The teen awards show will be broadcasted on FOX on August 11.
Hamilton is also up for an ESPY award for best comeback. The ESPY’s will be broadcasted on ESPN on July 18.
UH football tickets going fast
Ticket renewals for the 2004 UH football season have reached the 21,000 mark, Athletics Director Herman Frazier announced today.
There is approxiamately a three percent drop off in season ticket renewals from 2003 to 2004. Total sales reached 23,834 in 2003.
The sum of renewals and new sales is 21,800, which Frazier says indicates that the bottom line numbers are headed in the right direction.
Revenues from pay-per-view, which was first offered in 2002, were up 74 percent in 2003. Pay-per-view subscriptions for2004 are currently on sale.
