Have fun this summer
It is the closing of another school year and I know majority of the students that attend the three high schools on Kaua‘i will be taking the next biggest step in their lives. Being a student at Waimea High, I personally know that hardships and struggles that the graduating class has been going through for the past four years. Many students have been on the ball all along and are just now reaping the benefits that they have worked so hard for. Having some friends that are seniors, i have experienced that anxious and restless attitude that a lot of them have about getting off of this so-call “rock.”
The greater part of the graduating class will be heading off to college while a handful will stay and go straight into the work and miilitary. Whatever your plans be for your post-high school career, I commend you for getting this far. With all this ruckus in the air, go ahead and party because you have earned it.

Reflecting on Iraq War
I recently picked up the Wednesday, May 26 issue of The Garden Island. On the page with the Nation/World news, there was a picture of a soldier’s combat boot with his name tag on it. It explained that the American Friends Service Committee is preparing an exhibit near the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. where they will display 800 combat boots bearing the names of the 800 U.S. soldiers who have died in the war in Iraq.
I could not believe the number of soldiers that we have lost for this cause. All for what? What are they dying for? Because the United States, who have become the police of the world, did not like their form of government? Because we suspected them of having weapons of mass destruction? Where are these weapons? Have we found them? What right do we have to force our beliefs on the people of Iraq? Do we have the right to barge into their country and start killing their citizens because they are not living life the way we believe life should be lived?
America is the land of the free. It is one of our greatest privileges. To be who we are without fear of reprimand. We will be handing over political authority to the Iraqi government on June 30. Will things be different for them? Will all these men and women have died for nothing? These are some of the questions that come to my mind when I think about this war in Iraq.

Gay marriage
I have been watching television and been keeping up on the news in America. It concerns me to see many states of the United States passing laws to legalize gay marriages.
I believe families are produced by a man and a woman. See if it was a man and a woman and they have children they could continue the family heritage for many generations.
If there are two men or two women and they adopt a child then the family wouldn’t continue.
The only thing I ask is how can we stop the courts and rogue local officials from overriding the will of the people who continue to oppose homosexual marriage by a wide margin?
