I read the article entitled “Zoology specialist warns of herbicide danger to coral” in which Dr. Anthony Shen, a medical doctor and zoology specialist, points a finger at Kauai Coffee Company for the possibility that herbicides, possibly from their coffee fields, have damaged coral around the island.
I noticed that although he had no evidence, no reason to believe that it was Kauai Coffee’s herbicide use that caused this damage, he gets a one-quarter page article to slander them anyway. Just because he has an M.D.?
Any article submitted to a journal with such little evidence would be thrown out on peer review, when others in the field critique an article before it is published. I cannot believe that we would allow someone to come here, on vacation, and do such a thing. I can understand him expressing his concern to the appropriate authority for them to review it.
But to come out in the local paper with such an accusation, when he appears to know very little about other practices or events on the island that might have caused this damage is disgraceful. And when it wasn’t enough to blame the coffee company for herbicide damage that is unproven, he adds that he dislikes their hiring practices and claims they are bad neighbors?
How rude. It is such behavior that give tourists on this island, particularly Californians, a bad name. Thank you, Dr. Shen, for pointing out that there we have damaged coral and should work to improve the conditions. However, I believe we should do that for all of us, not just as a gesture for the tourists that visit us.

I can certainly sympathize with how frustrating it must be to feel like you’re being a target but every city in every state has speed traps. I looked up Washington’s seat belt laws and they are required to use seat belts in their state, matter of fact…it shouldn’t be assumed Hawai‘i is any different. In coming to the islands every year one thing I know for sure is that when any rental car company rents you a vehicle that they tell you seat belts are required. I got the feeling by point #3 “we contribute to the island’s economy” that you somehow felt you should be exempt from receiving a ticket?
