I wish to congratulate the administration for appointing Lt. C. Lum as interim Kaua‘i Police Chief.
Lt. Lum has an outstanding reputation with both the citizens of the North Shore and the patrol officers who worked for him. I believe that not only does he have the administrative skills to perform the job of chief, but also that he has the courage and integrity it takes to make changes.
As a Kaua‘i resident, I am aware that a large part of our community recognizes that changes are needed. Naturally, more officers in the department would help, but that is a budgetary matter. We need someone who can raise the morale of the current officers, someone who can motivate, train, instill discipline and hold accountable not only the patrolmen on the street but also the supervisors and command officers. This is a formidable task. Whoever is the chief will face resistance, backstabbing, politics, and the entire gamut of problems of an administrator who seeks positive change.
We have some fine , hard-working officers on our department, and they deserve the leadership that Chief Lum can provide. We, as a community, along with the Mayor, Council and Police Commission as our representatives, should give all of our support to the efforts of the new Chief.
Dangers of drinking and smoking
I am writing this article because I want to talk about alcohol and drugs because I’ve seen what it can do to others.
I see lots of people around smoking or drinking and it ends up bad because alot of peoples’ livers are damaged by drinking a lot of peoples’ lungs are turning black and some are dying.
So I come to tell people that if you want to end your life by doing these things go on and do it, but you will end up sick, very sick.
“So don’t do drugs.”
Adopt A School
On May 18 Adopt A School Celebration was held at the Convention Center. I had a chance to take part in the celebration. It was a good experience to see everyone come together with their hi-tech companies.
It was a great idea to have the different hi-tech companies, adopting a school and preparing the youth for a career in the high-tech industry on Kaua‘i.
With the support of these companies, it is a privilege to work with them. In the future, they provide the local people with jobs, other than bringing people outside of Hawai‘i.
