PMRF
I would like to express my feelings concerning the Navy’s request to take over more land besides the I land they already have obtained here in Kauai. I feel that they should not be given anymore land whatsoever and should in fact give back the land they have already obtained without the approval of the citizens here. I am sure that an overwhelming majority of the people here would agree that the government should bring giving this land to the Navy to a vote of Kauaian residents before they even consider it. I guarantee that Kauaians would be against it.
The military has already illegally stopped people from having access to beach lands around the base and now they want to take over prime beautiful beach land further around them and do the same. They should not be allowed to have it and they should be made to stop blocking access to beach lands around the base now. They should not have the right to block our access the same as no one else can block access to Hawaiian beach lands. I have actually found the state law that says no one can block access to any beaches and there was no mention that the military was exempt on this.
The military uses fear tactics as their method to obtain this land on the ground of terrorist attack but in truth their presence is a threat to us making us targets because they are here and if they increase their presence they will 10 fold increases our danger of being targeted by terrorist. As it is, the Military is already illegally using State and Federal land for clandestine spying missions. They have buried missiles in the hillsides by their base on land they should not be on and have taken over beautiful mountain tops to base their spy stations all without the approval of the citizens here.

Kilauea gym
The Garden Island paper has had a number of articles and letters in the past few weeks concerning the leaking roof, and what has been done about stopping the leaks. Apparently the problem remains unresolved.
There is a possibility that the second roof contractor may have not been fully paid for his work because water problems are still a concern. Recently I was at the Kilauea neighborhood center and I took a set of pictures of this roof.
There appears to be two roofs. The first I assume was a conventional composition asphalt tile roof, and the second is a center ridge panel roof, completely covering the whole roof area.
My pictures show gable ends for the east and west sides of the gym roof, without any vents or means of exhaust. This is not a good design feature for any building. Perhaps there is some internal air circulation system that takes care of moist hot air rising toward the roof. If not I can recommend that vents be installed at the peak of each gable end. For best results there should be exhaust fans at each vent.
When a roof structure is not properly vented there is the possibility of moist air cooling down at night and condensing on the inside of the roof and interior construction. This could be a big problem for a gym, where basketball players may be perspiring heavily, and cheering crowds can add moisture to the air.
From past experience I am sure that proper venting of a roof is very important to the success of a building.

Manners
What ever happened to manners? My family and I was enjoying the day at the beach. It was a beautiful day. The sun was up, the sky was blue and the water was delightful. I was having a blast until another family came and they started to talk loud. They ruined the day. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. The way the dad was talking to his children was as if they were young adults. A lot of foul language was coming out of his mouth. Every word at the end of the sentence was a bad word. Look around you. You should be ashamed. How would you feel if someone would talk to you the same way. Don’t you realize that if you speak to your children that way, they will grow up to speak the same way too. Children took up to their parents for guidance and support. They will grow up to be just like you. If you teach them good manners when they are young, they will respect themselves and others too. Talking down to your children will make them feel dumb. Saying “please” and “thank you” is a great start. So, “please” teach them good manners and they will become respectful adults.

Cruise troubles
As a regular reader of The Garden Island and a resident of Kaua‘i I am very interested in the report today on A3 about the NCL (Norwegian Cruise Line) cruise ship Pride of Aloha now on track, and NCL President and Chief Executive Officer Colin Veitch’s wish to “eke out a living.”
My wife and I paid NCL for our cruise in January and February of this year, the monies being withdrawn from our account within 24 hours each time. We looked forward this exciting trip from O‘ahu to Vancouver B.C. on the NCL (Norwegian) Star beginning Sunday May 2.
Sadly, due to a propeller-pod problem, the cruise was cancelled on April 9 just one week after we received our cabin assignments. We managed to salvage our vacation by flying to B.C. and extending the already booked visit to Vancouver Island.
We have made many requests for the return of our cruise money, and although many weeks have now gone by NCL public relations (officials) still say “its under review.”
We sincerely hope that NCL can make a success of their new venture under a U.S. flag, and perhaps show a little aloha to these islands and its many visitors. Perhaps Colin Veitch could focus on customer satisfaction now.
