LIHU‘E — A short ceremony with a gathering of about fifty people recognized the efforts of Kaua‘i Police Department officers for their efforts that went above and beyond the call of duty.
KPD Chief KC Lum and Mayor Bryan Baptiste both congratulated and thanked the officers for their efforts that went above and beyond the call of duty, in some instances, officers risking life and limb to accomplish their tasks of keeping residents and visitors safe.
One example of this was KPD Officer James C. Rabasa’s efforts whose direct involvement resulted in a person being alive and well today. Rabasa received the lifesaving medal for his efforts at unassisted and unprotected cardio-pulmonary resuscitation that kept the victim alive until fire and rescue ambulance crews arrived.
Medal of Valor recipients Officer Randolph Chong-Tim, Sr., and Officer Len H. Nitta were involved in disarming an individual who entered KPD offices with a loaded rifle with the intent of injuring personnel while Meritorious Conduct Medal Recipients were acknowledged for their efforts at alleviating tensions at Lihu‘e Airport where an individual bearing a loaded handgun entered a restricted area and shots were fired.
Officer James J. Miller, Sergeant Eric D. Kaui, Sergeant Sylvester Oliveira, Jr., and Sergeant James M. Kurasaki were recipients of this honor.
Certificate of Merit Medal recipients included Officer Ginny N. Scribner and Officer Ray M. Takekawa.
Drug Enforcement Star Medal recipients included Officer Paul C. Baumung, Officer Eric J. Caspillo, Officer Chad S. Cataluna, Officer Elliott K. Ke, Officer James J. Miller, Officer Daniel Oliveira, Officer Darren D. Rose, Officer Brian Silva, Officer Harold J. Venneman, Sergeant Micahel M. Contrades, and Sergeant Wesley F. Perreira.
The awards are for actions dating back to 2001, and many of the officers receiving awards and recognition had family members present for the occasion.
