LIHU‘E — Kalen Chang came up with a two-run in-the-park homer in the bottom of their final inning to spark a three-run performance for the Lihu‘e Baseball League’s Mustang Mariners on Saturday.
But, the effort fell short as the Cardinals wrapped up an 18-6 win behind four scores from Trey Smith and another three from Chevis Takasaki who closed on the mound for the Cards.
The Cardinals sprinkled their runs throughout the game with their most productive inning coming in the final frame where they drove seven runs across the plate.
The Mariners chalked up a run in the first, third, and fourth frames before their productive final frame.
Earlier in the day, the Indians found renewed energy as they went through the paces of a mock game on an empty field after coming through with five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to edge out the league-leading Yankees, 11-10.
“It’s not over until it’s over,” one of the Indians coaches said while watching the Cardinals’ game. “We were down 10-6 until that last inning.”
Coaches gathered for the post-game festivities in the convention hall parking lot mulled over the game, Indians coach “Roach” Domingcil commenting on how Yankees’ coach Tommy John Cox alluded to the scoreboard when queried about the Indians’ deficit.
All of that changed during the post-game handshaking when Domingcil quietly said to Cox during their meeting, “Scoreboard. Scoreboard.”
The Lihu‘e Baseball League ate the closing of their 2004 season this Saturday at the Lihue‘e County Park starting at 9 a.m.
All-star teams for both the Mustangs and Broncos will be selected, and will culminate with the classic showdown between the East (Lihu‘e) and the West for the island title later in the summer.
