TEAHUPOO, Tahiti — Kaua‘i’s Andy Irons and Florida’s Kelly Slater ended the Billabong Pro Teahupoo in equal third as 2001 world champion CJ Hobgood (FL., USA) took the drama-filled event that ran in perfect 8-foot surf interspersed with rainsqualls drifting over the flotilla of boats and spectators without affecting the barrels racing along the reef.
Hobgood started the 35-minute final against Nathan Hedge by breaking his surfboard on his first wave. Moments later, Hedge almost lost his left arm during a wipeout, dislocating the arm at the shoulder.
