Occupants of the center of the island’s high-technology future celebrate the fifth anniversary of the West Kauai Technology & Visitors Center with an open house tomorrow, Friday, April 30, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
The visitor-center component of the buildings, which opened in April 1999, offers programs emphasizing the tradition, culture, and lifestyle of the island.
The public is invited to meet the staff and view exhibits designed for residents and visitors alike.
Static exhibits trace the history of Kaua‘i, through the eyes of engineering and design, from the ancient Hawaiians to the current initiatives of the U.S. Navy’s Pacific Missile Range Facility to the futuristic endeavors of NASA.
In addition to offering the Taro Patch Connection program, lei and quilt-making classes and a historic walking tour of Waimea, free Internet access is also available to the community (through a donation of six computers from officials at Kaua‘i Community College).
The high-tech component of the center includes many businesses, most with U.S. Department of Defense contracts to develop products and processes tested at PMRF.
