Kuhio Highway in Lihu‘e, in the vicinity of ‘Ehiku Street near Wal-Mart, will be reduced from four to two lanes of traffic most of next week.
Reconstruction of a sewer manhole begins Monday, May 3, and is expected to run night and day until repairs are completed.
The scheduled completion is the afternoon of Thursday, May 6, according to sources with the county Department of Public Works Division of Wastewater.
Workers from Aqua Engineers will demolish and remove the deteriorating manhole and install a new structure.
A temporary steel plate has been laid over the existing manhole cover to protect vehicles traveling over the area. The contractor is presently mobilizing necessary equipment and materials needed to complete the repairs.
The repairs were prompted by a sewage spill last week, when the manhole was found to be severely damaged, said Cyndi Mei Ozaki, county public information officer.
Ozaki said an estimated 500 gallons ended up in a storm drain behind Sun Village condominiums when a Wilcox Memorial Hospital pumping station was unable to pump into the gravity line, flooding a line between the AT&T Wireless building and Kuhio Medical Center, and causing damage to the manhole.
