LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i High School girls basketball took their second win in as many nights by sweeping the Kapa‘a Warriors to open the second round of KIF girls basketball at the Raiderdome Tuesday night.
The Raiders shook off opening frame jitters to take a 46-36 win in the varsity contest while in the JV game, banked on balanced scoring to outlast the JV Warriors, 44-34.
Ulu Kelekoma seems to be the magic potion the Raiders need as she again played a significant role in their victory, although nothing dropped in the first frame and the Warriors took a 13-8 lead at the buzzer behind a seven-point showing from Bristol King and four from Amniesty Ragsac.
With 2:08 left in the half, Kaua‘i’s Ali Jackson’s bucket stalemated the contest with Kelekoma breaking the Warriors’ back on a feed from Holly Iloreta to score at the buzzer for the 23-22 lead.
The second half saw the Raiders fully awake and exerted the same defensive intensity they demonstrated against the Menehune during the Monday night playoff contest resulting in King fouling out towards the end of the third period.
That Kelekoma bucket at the halftime buzzer gave Kaua‘i a lead that only grew as the Raiders outshot Kapa‘a 23-14 in the second half for the win. Janee Correia and Sherri Gebauer each added six marker with Jackson adding five.
Kelekoma finished with a game-total ten points before fouling out followed by Iloreta adding nine, Rachael Taira contributing eight while replacing Kelekoma on the foul-out.
King led the Warriors with 11 points before buzzing out followed by Kennilyn Nakamura picking up the pace for five of her game-total six points in the final quarter. Nicole Kunioka-Volz, Ragsac, and Brittney Carvalho each tagged five points.
Cherisse Rapozo led the Raider JV with nine points followed by Britten Jacinto, Kassy Morishige, and Dannica Jimenez each adding six points in their win.
Kieren Pond finished with a game-high 11 points for the Kapa‘a JV followed by Caroline Troutman adding eight and April Johnson fueling the effort with seven points.
Due to the KIF Track Meet Friday night, Kapa‘a will make the journey to the Clem Gomes Gym in Waimea on Saturday, April 24 with the JV game tipping off at 5:30 p.m.
