LIHU‘E — The effort of over 300 Lihue Gateway project volunteers last October 25 is again paying off.
Not only did the volunteers continue in their commitment to keep up the Lihu‘e Airport entrance landscaping project, but they’ve also been honored by USA Weekend Magazine’s annual “Make A Difference Day” program.
The national effort focused on October 25, 2003 and drew entries from across the nation.
The Lihue Gateway project received the award — co-sponsored by The Garden Island newspaper with USA Weekend magazine — for Kaua‘i, sharing Hawai‘i honors with a neighborhood watch program on Maui, American Cancer Society work in Honolulu and a civic improvement project in Hilo.
Gabrielle Young of Koloa submitted the proposal. In her application she cited Lihue Gateway organizer Eddie Sarita’s discovery of the project in a Sunday edition of The Garden Island as the seed for the award application. The annual program has become popular across the United States, with the local project garnering a mention in newspapers across the western United States.
