Kaua‘i has a history of producing winners in a statewide contest seeking to recognize outstanding older workers.
Jeanne Stanwood, 82, a social worker from Kapa‘a, was the statewide winner one year.
Dr. Sharon Bintliff, 66, who lives in Kamuela on the Big Island but commutes to work at Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital at the West Kauai Medical Center in Waimea as a medical director, was a winner, too.
Experience Works, the country’s largest provider of mature-worker training and employment, is searching for Hawai‘i’s outstanding older worker for 2004.
For the seventh year, outstanding older workers from every state, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico; America’s oldest worker; and outstanding employers of older workers, will be honored in Washington, D.C. and in their home states, through the Experience Works Prime Time Awards Program.
The program was created to highlight the valuable contributions that older workers are making in their communities and places of work.
Hawai‘i organizers of the contest are currently soliciting nominations from businesses and individuals. Applicants must be 65 years of age or older, Hawai‘i residents, currently employed, and working at least 20 hours each week for pay.
The honoree must be willing and able to travel to Washington, D.C. in early October for the Experience Works Prime Time Award Program events.
Applicants who are part of a subsidized employment program funded by the local, state or national government are not eligible for this award.
Official nomination forms may be obtained by mail at Prime Time Awards, Experience Works, 2200 Clarendon Blvd., Suite 1000, Arlington, VA 22201, or by calling toll-free 1-866-397-9757.
A nomination form can be accessed online at http://www.experienceworks.org. The deadline for nominations is Friday, May 7.
A search for America’s oldest worker for 2004 is also under way. Last year, Dr. Russell Clark, 102, real estate developer and retired physician, was named America’s oldest worker.
