Kaliko Oligo and Clay Daugherty have been selected the NCAA Division I Independent Baseball Player, and Co-Pitcher of the Week.
Oligo, a Waimea High graduate, enjoyed the finest series by a University of Hawai‘i-Hilo Vulcan this season, batting a .733 (11-for-15), while also recording an .800 on-base average, and a .933 slugging percentage while accounting for six runs as Hilo split a four-game series with Sacramento State.
Oligo opened the series with a 3-for-4 performance that also saw him steal a base and drive in a run. In the following contest, Oligo went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored while notching another RBI as the Vulcans blanked Sac State, 5-0.
The next day, Oligo batted 2-for-4 with another double in the first game of a double-header before going 4-for-4 with a run and an RBI in the nightcap. Oligo was also perfect in 10 defensive opportunities.
The Vulcan sparkplug raised his season batting average to .320 this week. Oligo, who stands 5’7″, now leads UH Hilo in doubles with ten, triples with four, slugging percentage (.422), runs (22), and stolen bases (10).
Daugherty made the final home start of his collegiate career by twirling a complete-game, two-hit shutout, allowing a first inning lead-off single, and a hit in the fourth inning before holding the Hornet bats silent the rest of the night. Daugherty struck out three with one walk allowed while limiting Sac State to a .087 batting average against him.
Daugherty, a senior from Cleveland, Okla., out-dueled Sac State ace Ethan Katz for the victory which came in the nightcap of a “Senior Night” double-header for the Vulcans.
On the season, Daugherty now leads the Vulcan pitching staff with a 4.44 ERA and improved his record to 2-5.
