Part-time Kaua‘i resident and former world champion pro surfer Sunny Garcia collapsed on the beach at Bells Beach, Australia today during a heat of the Rip Curl Pro.
Despite leading their heat Garcia expressed to fellow surfer Taylor Knox that he was suffering from a painful headache and would have to make his way back to the beach. Upon hitting the sand Garcia held his head in hands and then fell to the ground where medics were waiting on hand to receive him.
After receiving first aid from the medics Garcia was then rushed to the Geelong Hospital in Victoria, about one hour drive south of Melbuorne, for treatment, according to an Association of Surfing Professionals’ report.
