Sean Tamura co-player of the week
HILO, Hawai‘i — Junior rightfielder Sean Tamura and senior pitcher Clay Daugherty have earned recognition as co-player and pitcher of the week among NCAA Division I independent programs.
Tamura enjoyed a fine week in UH Hilo’s six game series against Big West member Cal Poly SLO, batting .421 (8-for-19), while also posting a .526 slugging percentage and a .526 on base average. Tamura, the team’s third batter, drilled two doubles and also stole three bases in as many attempts on the week.
Tamura opened the week with a 2-for-4 showing with a double against the Mustangs. Tamura remained hot, going 2-for-4 again while also stealing two bases in game two of the series. The series finale saw Tamura finish the week with a bang, as he went 2-for-3 with two runs scored a double and another steal. On the season, Tamura now leads the Vulcans in batting average (.331), runs (18), doubles (9) and steals (9).
Daugherty enjoyed the finest start of his career this weekend against a tough Cal Poly San Luis Obispo squad, holding the Mustangs scoreless on just three hits over seven innings.
Daugherty, who hails from Cleveland, Okla., allowed single hits in each of the first three innings and then proceeded to hold the Mustangs hitless for the remainder of his appearance.
Daugherty went the scheduled seven inning distance and struck-out four, as UH Hilo lost the game in extra innings. Daugherty’s performance was one of Hilo’s most impressive of the season, considering that the 28-12-1 Mustangs are hitting well over .300 as a team and have already claimed series over San Jose State, Pepperdine and UC Santa Barbara.
