LIHU‘E —Becka Simanu of Kapolei High School finished with a total of 22 points as the Lady Hurricanes swept all three of their pre-season matches against schools from the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation (KIF) over the weekend.
With the KIF girls basketball season looming in a week, Kaua‘i’s basketball teams were given a challenge as they tackled the Division II team from the O‘ahu Interscholastic Federation.
The Lady Hurricanes topped the Waimea Menehune, 44-37 Friday night with Simanu and Kayla Kam combining for 16 points in the win.
Malorie Hepa topped the Waimea scoring roster with 11 points, and Janna Soto helped with an eight-point finish in the loss.
Saturday saw the Lady Hurricanes visit the Bernice Hundley where they outgunned the Lady Warriors, 14-6 in the final quarter enroute to taking a four-point margin, 41-37 into the showers.
Simanu topped the Kapolei scoring with 13 points in that outing with Tanya Menio adding eight, and Shauntay Leutu finishing with seven points.
Kapa‘a got balanced scoring in the loss, led by Bristol King’s nine points, Kennilyn Nakamura adding eight, and Jackie Alapai and Nicole Kunioka-Volz each netting six points each.
From there, the Lady Hurricanes blew into the Raiderdome Saturday night where they were almost stopped by Kaua‘i, 51-48.
Down by three points, a late-game time out drew out the plans for Kaua‘i as Rachael Taira who plagued Kapolei throughout the night, took the half-court inbound, and a three-point launch in hopes of a tie came up empty at the buzzer.
Leafa Vagatai and Kam topped the Kapolei effort with 12 and 11 points respectively, the effort netting Kam with a combined 18-point total for their Kaua‘i series.
Holly Iloreta and Ulu Kelekoma each netted 16 points to lead the Kaua‘i effort.
Kaua‘i will travel to the Bernice Hundley Gym in Kapa‘a on Tuesday, Mar. 30 as the KIF opens its 2004 girls basketball season with the JV contest tipping off at 5:30 p.m. followed by the varsity contest starting 20 minutes following the completion of the JV game.
Friday night, the Lady Warriors will make the trip out to Menehuneland for the 5:30 p.m. JV start.
