The Waimea High School baseball team under the direction of new head coach Nelson Mendonca and assistant coaches Kelly Robinson and Vincent Parongao are not taking their recent achievements lightly as they prepare to host Kapa‘a High School Wednesday at Hanapepe Stadium for their 2004 KIF opener.
Despite taking the championship for their own 21st Annual Waimea HS Invitational Baseball Tournament with a 6-4 win over Mid-Pacific Institute, the Menehune were defeated by the Kaua‘i High School Red Raiders before rebounding to win over Kapa‘a and Kailua enroute to the championship.
One spectator noted that Waimea was playing well, not striving for spectacular plays, but concentrating on getting their basics in place, making contact with the ball, base running, and defensive executions, and should be in good shape for the season.
Prior to their tournament, Waimea and Kaua‘i were on O‘ahu participating in the Mid-Pacific tournament where the Menehune had the distinction of handing Punahou its only loss of the tournament before falling to the host Mid-Pacific.
Coach Mendonca and his staff were on hand Saturday to watch Kaua‘i and Kapa‘a split the KIF season opener in preparation for their Wednesday game which starts at 2:45 p.m.
The game will be broadcast live on KQNG Am 570 by Joel Pahukula.
