KALAHEO — The Kalaheo 19 Under squad coached by Steven Matsumoto pulled off two squeakers during the week, escaping the Hanamaulu Boys, 37-36 on Tuesday, and then, getting by the Westside Klowns, 42-20 on Thursday night in the KYBA Teen League played at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Tuesday night’s action saw Kalaheo’s Tab Matsumoto relinquish his normal high pointer position to feed the inside and grab rebounds as guard Jeremy Manuel entered the spotlight with high point honors in their win over HB, Manuel finishing the night with 13 points.
The pain in Kalaheo’s game came in the guise of HB’s Roli Sagisi who kept pulling Hanamaulu back into the fray during the second half.
Trailing through the first half, 13-17, Kalaheo entered the black with two minutes left in the third quarter as Manuel tied the contest for the first time only to have Sagisi answer the shot.
Jordan Shea pulled Kalaheo into a second stalemate late in the period only to have Sagisi rattle off a trey.
The see-saw battle continued with Manuel pulling Kalaheo ahead for the third time with a shot from three-pointland only to have Sagisi once again answer the call for a 36-35 reading with less than a minute in the game.
A pair of charity shots from Kalaheo’s Kaulana Lemke was the decider with five ticks left on the clock as an unchallenged lunge shot by Sagisi came up empty.
Kaupili Akau drove the lane for HB to finish with 20 points followed by Sagisi’s 10 second-half points. Lyden Eugenio and Koa Navarro rounded out the HB scoring with four and two points respectively.
Shea helped the Kalaheo effort with six points followed by Lemke finishing with five points including the deciding charity pair. Chris Colacino and Matsumoto finished with four each, and three from Kamu Kawaihalau rounded out the books.
ZZ, coached by Jeff Venzon, broke open a 17-17 halftime deadlock to take a 43-30 win over Lihu‘e Medina Tuesday night behind 11 points from Garrett Sakimae and nine points from Ryan Cram.
ZZ continued their winning ways on Thursday night as Sakimae topped all shooters with 15 points enroute to their 60-41 showing over HB. Sam Chung and Lance Okasaki helped the ZZ cause with 10 points each while Akau topped the HB shooting with 19 points followed by Sagisi tipping in eight.
Lihu‘e Medina got 14 points from Matthew Palaroan with Aaron Medina and Ryan Bunao each finishing with six points against ZZ Tuesday night.
The final game of the week saw Josh Bradbury close with 24 points in a losing effort as Southside fell to Lihu‘e Medina 51-43 behind Palaroan’s 13 points and Kenan Guzman’s dozen markers.
Ross Acoba helped the Southside effort with six points.
