WAIMEA — Kapa‘a and Kaua‘i high school baseball teams were victimized in the opening day of the 21st Annual Waimea High School Invitational Baseball Tournament Thursday.
Kapa‘a, banking on the pitching of Moses Punzal, battled with Wai‘anae for the first inning, Punzal holding his own, but hitting two Wai‘anae batters in two innings.
The Warrior defense pulled off a second inning double play, but with two outs, could not shut the door as Wai‘anae’s Sonny Dudoit got life on a pickoff attempt that saw Kapa‘a catcher Tyson Cremer’s throwout go past firstbaseman Kai Lopez.
Dudoit went on to score on an RBI single by Charleson Low as Wai‘anae opened up the frame for five runs led by a 2-RBI double from Ransen Sylva enroute to their 6-2 victory.
Over at the Menehune park fronting the Clem Gomes Gym, the Kaua‘i Red Raiders were suffering their own woes as Kirby Yates sat atop a cooler nursing a sprained ankle.
That put Dustin Pagador at third, and Garen Itamura on the mound.
Kailua capitalized on Itamura who was relieved by Shannon Oketani who was able to get the Raiders out of the inning, but the Kailua pitching held Kaua‘I at bay until the second and third innings when the Raider bats started answering, a little too late as the contest was called after five-and-a half innings with Kailua taking an 11-8 win to the opening pa‘ina.
