Twelve year old identical twins, Darren “Mini Bomber” Buyat and Jimmy “Tiny Terminator” in their pristine state were already good boxers. About all a coach has to do is teach them not to do anything illegal in the boxing ring. It is a virtual war when they spar each other however Darren is the one the coach picked to go to the Junior Boxing Championships in Maui to vie for the 65 pound title which has two other contestants. The “Mini Bomber” trains much harder then the happy go lucky Jimmy. Jimmy however, is Darren’s chief sparring partner and may push him to a state title.
The Junior Boxing Championships will be held on March 20 and 21 on Maui. Micah “The Tigah” Matsushima will contend in the 85 pound division against two others. According to the coach, the eleven year old sixth grader has loads of heart. Micah has a lust for combat and instinctively tries to get in the last punch before the bell and sometimes after the bell. He doesn’t seem to get bored when asked to do countless repetitions and pesters the coach to no end when he doesn’t quite get the mechanics of a move or punch. The fact that Matsushima never quits trying to win bodes well for the classroom too; he is in the gifted and talented class for math.
Alex “X-Man” Kamala is gifted and talented in boxing. He has been training the longest. He has outlasted other boys his age, a dozen older boys who quit and at least five Waimea High School girl cheerleaders who gave boxing a gallant try for a couple of months. Alex kept coming to practice with great patience and support from his parents, Adele and Bo Kamala until he has become the coach’s official demonstrator of magnificent boxing moves. Despite his talent the coach thought Alex simply wasn’t tough enough to be a good boxer. But recently X-Man redeemed himself in an epic battle with police officer Mark Ozaki’s son, Ross “Robocop Jr.” Ozaki. It is a pitty that their three round sparring session was viewed by only the few that were in the gym. Kamala’s favorite punch is the left uppercut to the jaw, probably because the coach makes him throw it all the time. He is definitely going to need it in Maui when he goes eyeball to eyeball with the only other contestant in the 114 pound division.
Kaua‘i’s junior boxers will be fun raising in the next few weeks. They will be selling laulaus which will be picked up at Oki Diner.
