The KIF champion boys soccer team, the Kaua‘i High School Red Raiders under coach Mark Brandeburg dropped their opening bid for the state title, losing to Pearl City 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Aloha Stadium.
The loss relegates the Kaua‘i Red Raiders to the consolation bracket where they will meet the loser of the Kamehameha vs. Castle contest.
Results of the opening day of the 2004 Ohana Resorts and Hotel/HHSAA Boys Soccer Championship saw Kaiser hand Waiakea a 2-0 loss while Kalaheo got past Hilo, 2-1.
Fourth seed Baldwin is the only outer island team to remain in contention for the state title that is currently held by the tournament’s top seeded Mililani Trojans.
BYUH holds on to No. 2 NCAA II spot
LAI‘E, O‘ahu — The Brigham Young University-Hawai‘i men’s basketball team held steady at second in the West Region in the NCAAII Regional Poll released Wednesday.
The poll places the Seasiders behind only 20-1 Cal State-San Bernardino among regional teams, but considers only games played through last Sunday.
The regional poll ultimately determines which teams will receive bids to the NCAA II tournament in March, the top eight teams in the final regional poll receiving tournament bids.
The Seasiders, 19-4 on the season, currently lead the Pacific West Conference with a 9-2 mark and need just one win in their last four games to clinch at least a tie for the conference title. The PacWest winner receives an automatic bid to the NCAA II tournament. Only one other PacWest team, Montana State-Billings, holds a spot in the regional top ten at the ninth position, but the Yellowjackets’ loss last night at Chaminade was not considered for the poll.
