WAILUA — With the KIF championship regatta looming on Saturday, the Kaua‘i High School girls and the Kapa‘a High School boys hold the lead in the KIF Paddling series. Island School and Kaua‘i are deadlocked for the lead in the Mixed Varsity races following Saturday’s regatta on the Wailua River.
The Red Raider girls have swept all three of their regattas to accumulate a total of 15 points following Saturday’s race with Island School holding down second place with 11 points.
Waimea has eight points for third place in the girls varsity division, and Kapa‘a girls inched past Kula with four points they earned after Saturday’s race, Kula rounding out the board with three points.
In the boys varsity competition, Kapa’a commands the lead with 12 points despite finishing third in Saturday’s event. Island School, finishing first in the boys varsity races Saturday is still in third place with eight points, with the race for second deadlocked between Kaua‘i and Waimea with nine points each, the Menehune surging to a second place finish in Saturday’s regatta, a disappointment after a strong second race where they topped the race trying to come back after DQ-ing the opener.
The Red Raiders topped the Mixed varsity race Saturday and are tied with Island School for the lead with each school standing at 13 points each. Kapa‘a, finishing third in Saturday’s event, is in second place with nine points followed by Waimea with seven points.
The KIF Championship regatta will take place at the Wailua River starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 14 with the points doubling for the event.
The First Hawaiian Bank HHSAA Canoe Paddling StateTournament will be held on Feb. 28 at Keehi Lagoon on the island of O‘ahu.
