Lloyd Ikaika Pratt, a Hawaiian sovereign who has been cleaning heiau in Kalalau and claims it as a residence, created a unique scene at Hanalei District Court yesterday before being sentenced to jail for contempt of court and camping violations.
After District Court Judge Frank Rothschild rejected Ikaika’s motion for a new trial, Ikaika, as he prefers to be called, cursed the court and stormed out of the courthouse before he could be sentenced, according to County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Rosa Flores.
He had to be retrieved by the court sheriffs, she added.
When he returned, he continued to curse the court, she said. He then was sentenced to 24 days in jail and $325 in fines for four counts of contempt of court, two counts of camping without a permit, and one count of camping in a closed park area.
Rothschild added no additional jail time, fines or penalties for Ikaika’s courtroom antics.
He was taken into police custody from there, she said.
One person who was at the court for another matter and did not want to be named said the scene was quite comical when Ikaika left the courthouse.
“He was running the officers around. They couldn’t catch him,” the man said. “He made them look like fools. It was really humorous to see.”
According to another witness who is a closed friend of Ikaika’s, Ikaika asked the court to deport him or shoot him, because he does not want to live in this country anymore, claiming further that the court was an admiralty court.
He has stated that he is a native of the Kingdom of Hawai’i.
