WAILUA — The Kaua’i High School pocketed two of the three main events as the KIF kicked off its canoe paddling season Saturday afternoon at the Wailua River.
Taking first in the varsity girls division was the team made up of Alaina Villatora, Allison Jackson, Darcie Gusman, Kendrah Gallardo, Storm Sasaki, and robin Caycayan who crossed the line at 4.06.19 ahead of second place finisher Island School followed by Waimea High School’s team at 4.21.10.
The Kapa’a Warriors’ varsity boys team of Derek Saiki, Aaron Norris, Kaleo Josiah, Kapena Haumea, Matthew Roman, and Trevor Boro streaked across the finish at 3.46.28 ahead of second place Island School who crossed at 4:43.32 with Kaua’i #1 team being put in the third slot.
Kaua’i took the top slot of the Varsity Mixed competition as the team of Allison Jackson, Darcie Gusman, Brian Rodriguez, Kendrah Gallardo, Preston Ramson, and Jason Glovasa was almost four seconds ahead of second place Island School in that competiton.
Waimea filled in the third slot over Kapa’a and Kula High.
In the JV competition, Kaua’i High took the Girls and JV Mixed races with Kula topping the JV Boys race.
The next regatta will be held Saturday, Jan. 31 at the Wailua River with the first race scheduled to start at 9 a.m.
