LIHU’E — Two KIF pool records and four state qualifying times emerged out of the first KIF Qualifying Swim Meet that was held at the Kaua’i High School pool Saturday.
Hosted by Kapa’a High School, the Warriors went on to establish their dominance in the program by winning both the overall girls and boys team scoring, the girls besting the 6-swimmer all-girl Menehune squad 72-63 while the Warrior men took the Red Raiders, 88-79 points.
Kaua’i 10th grader Keenan Anaya broke two pool records while establishing his state qualifying times in his second season as a high school swimmer.
Anaya’s tally in his high school career now stands at 13 KIF records in 14 swims, his record-breaking 57.69 in the 100 Fly earning him a slot at the HHSAA finals on Feb. 27-28 at the Maui Sakamoto Pool.
Will Ajates, the sole swimmer from Island School was also a double winner, taking the 200 IM and 100 Back races. Ajates’ 200 IM time of 2:15.97 qualified him for the state meet in that event.
Waimea’s Katelyn Umetsu led the Menehune swimmers, Umetsu a winner in the 200 IM and the 100 Back races as well.
Kapa’a Men’s team in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay also earned their state berth, finishing at 3:42.96 over Kaua’i High School’s 3:52.85.
That Warrior squad consists of Jeremy Albano, Andrew Salvador, Dylan Swigart, and Michael Maddock.
