Makoto Takiguchi
Makoto “Mako” Takiguchi of Lihu’e, died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Jan. 12, 2004 at the age of 85.
Born in Kealia, on July 3, 1918, he was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife, Lillian; son, Wayne Takiguchi of Honolulu, O’ahu; two daughters, Nadine (Arthur) Oshima of Lihu’e and Verna (Mel) Yamase of Lihu’e; grandchildren, Shari Oshima, Scott Oshima, Christie Muraoka, Colten Yamase and Ling Weese; great-grandchildren, Mia Takekuma and Alyssa Oshiro; two brothers, Tadashi “Tad” Takiguchi and Harris (Sue) Takiguchi both of Lihu’e; sister, Takiko Takiguchi of Honolulu, O’ahu; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Jan. 17, at the Lihue Christian Church; service at 11 a.m. Casual attire is suggested and flowers omitted.

Clement Telles
Clement “Duffy” Telles of Longview, Wash., died on Nov. 24, 2003 at the age of 77.
Born in Niumalu on May 20, 1926, he was a longshoreman for Local #21, retired and served in the U.S. Army.
Preceded in death by his father, James Telles Sr.; mother, Esther Telles; sister, Edna Hurley; and brother Harold Telles. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Telles of Longview, Wash.; hanai daughter, Michelle McGhee of Graham, Wash.; three sisters, Marjorie Wong of Lihu’e, Carolyn Lim of Koloa, Lorraine White of Las Vegas, Nev.; two brothers, James Telles Jr., of Lihu’e, Allen Telles of Mt. Lake, Minn.; three grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may visit with the family on Monday, Jan. 19, from 1 p.m. at the Hanapepe Veterans Cemetery. Casual attire is suggested. Potluck to follow at the pavilion.
Lance Nakaahiki
Lance Curtis Kehaulani Nakaahiki of Pelion, S.C., an employee of Delta Airlines, died at the age of 42, on Dec. 21, 2003.
Born in Waimea, Lance is survived by his wife, Denesse; daughters, Malia (Lisi) Taufa and Tianya Nakaahiki; stepson, Keli’i (Chiaki) Vasconcellas; grandchildren, Sepiuta Taufa and Kai Vasconcellas. He is also survived by his paternal grandmother, Minnie Nakaahiki; mother, Caroline Nakaahiki; five brothers, Mitchell (Sherry) Nakaahiki, Henry (Sylvia) Nakaahiki, Clint (Haunani) Nakaahiki, Clarence (Nohea) Nakaahiki and Lyle (Yvette) Nakaahiki; four sisters, Debra (Larry) Gates, Minnie (Anthony) Natividad, Lynn Nakaahiki, Kahelelani (Lefty) Kanahele, numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Pio Pascua
Pio Ben Pascua of Kekaha, died at home on Jan. 1, 2004 at the age of 91.
Born in Santa, Ilocos Sur, Philippines on June 10, 1912, he was a retired irrigator with Kekaha Sugar Company.
He is preceded in death by parents, Meliton and Tranquilina Pascua; brother, Bienvenido; sisters, Conchita P. Javier and Laurena P. Baltero; grandson, Bonifacio Manglinong; son-in-law, Gonzalo Manglinong. He is survived by his wife, Juana Baltero Pascua; three sons, Antonio (Marlene) Pascua of Spring Valley, Calif., Mamerto (Fe) Pascua of Bensalem, Pennsylvania and Roy (Evelyn) Pascua of Colton, Calif.; three daughters, Estelita P. Manglinong of Kekaha, Anatalia (Buddy) Arellano of Seattle, Wash., and Lucita (Roland) de Peralta of San Diego, Calif.; two brothers, Jose Pascua of Philippines and Lazaro Pascua of Philippines; three sisters, Josefina P. Aglosolos of Philippines , Espirita Pascua of Philippines and Aurelia P. Nartatez of Waipahu, 17 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family from 6-9 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 16, at the St. Theresa Catholic Church; rosary officiated by Father Nap will begin at 7 p.m. Visitation also from 8 to 9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17, at the St. Theresa Catholic Church; mass officiated by Father Larry will begin at 10 a.m. Followed by burial at the church cemetery. Sun Kwong Say
Sun Kwong “Pauly” “Pake” Say of Hanalei, died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Jan. 6, 2004 at the age of 70.
Born in Hanalei on July 8, 1933, he was a taro farmer and fisherman and served on the Kauai Police Commission for five years and served in the U.S. Army.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Say; four sons, Paul (Aquilla) Say, Byron (Jonquil) Say, John (Diane) Pavao, Pierre (Julie) Pavao; daughter, Ke’ala (Dominic) Bartoloni; two brothers, Hugh (Clara) Say of Honolulu; Sun Kow “Shorty” (Lucy) Say of Honolulu; brother-in-law, Shigeo Tengan; three sisters, Violet Ho, of Honolulu, Ellen (Bill) Chang of California, Amy Say, of Honolulu; sister-in-law, Victoria Say, of Honolulu; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family on Sunday, Jan. 18, at the Borthwick Mortuary Chapel in Koloa from 2 to 4 p.m. Scattering will be held on a later date. Casual attire is suggested and flowers omitted.

Olimpia Duyanen
Olimpia Aradanas Duyanan went home to be with Jesus on Dec. 9, 2003. Born on April 17, 1925, she was 78 years old.
A longtime resident of Kaua’i and who just recently moved to San Jose, Calif., she is survived by her loving husband, Francisco Duyanen of San Jose, Calif. Together they have three adult children, Rosalina (Monico) Romero of Binalonan, Philippines, Fred (Milagros) Duyanen of Kekaha, and Willie (Melonee) Duyanen of Hanama’ulu. Olimpia and Francisco were blessed with 13 grandchildren, and 17 great grandchildren.
Services were held on Dec. 23, 2003 at Calvary Chapel of San Jose, Calif. She was laid to rest at Memorial Park, San Jose, Calif.
Alvin Yoshida
Alvin M. Yoshida of Kapa’a, died at his residence on Jan. 12, 2004 at the age of 59.
Born in Lihu’e, on Aug. 1, 1944, he was a retired Assistant Chief of Police with the County of Kaua’i Police Department.
He is survived by his wife, Judy of Kapa’a; two daughters, Sheri Lynn Yoshida of Honolulu, O’ahu and Jennifer Marie Yoshida of Las Vegas, Nev.; two brothers, Gary (Faye) Yoshida of Lihu’e and Myles Yoshida of Kapa’a; two sisters, Gail (Calvin) Asuncion and Jocelyn Vallejos both of Honolulu, O’ahu.
Friends may visit with the family at 3 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 16, at the Lihue Hongwanji Mission; service officiated by Rev. Yukiko Motoyoshi will begin at 4 p.m. Casual attire is suggested.

Pamela Phillips
Pamela Phillips, of Waipake, died on Jan. 11, 2004 at the age of 44. She was born in Laredo, Texas on Oct. 22, 1959.
She is survived by her two sons, Charles Kamohai, Jr. and David Phillips; their father, Charles Kamohai; mother, Sandra Sue Phillips, of Waipake; father, William James “Jim” Phillips, Jr. (Drenna), of Hilo; brother, William James “Bill” Phillips III (Jeanne) of Los Altos, Calif.; sister, Kimberly Phillips, of Moloa’a; and her nieces and nephews, Taysa, Keana, Sequioa, Nohea and Jonathan.
Pamela was a massage therapist at the Tri Health Clinic of Kilauea, where she created a caring and loving atmosphere for both her clients and fellow therapists. Her commitment and devotion to the Ayurvedic tradition of healing and health enriched the lives of everyone she met.
She was a steerswoman with Pu’uwai Canoe Club of Wailua for many years and will be remembered among the paddling community as a courageous, fun loving and positive role model who delighted in introducing others to her love of the ocean and paddling. Her enthusiasm and encouragement brought numerous people to the sport.
The same strength of heart that allowed Pamela to steer canoes across ocean channels was felt by family, friends and the community. We pray that this same strength will aid Pamela as she steers her new journey. She was a gift to us all and we will miss her caring, loving nature and joyous laughter.
Pamela’s family and Pu’uwai Canoe Club will be holding a celebration of Pamela’s life on Saturday, Jan. 17 and 11 a.m. at the Wailua River. Carol Havens can be contacted for further information at 823-6627.
