KAPA‘A — Three in-the-park homers spoiled a nice day for Kapa‘a as Waimea surged to a 12-2 win of the opener of a double-header series at the New Kapa‘a Ball Park on Saturday.
Alexis Nawai smacked the first of three in-the-park whacks in the third inning, and a pair of itp homers in the fifth iced the win, pinch hitter Jolene Corr notching her first in the season, driving Kanoe Carveiro across the plate.
Kodi Oyama notched her third itp of the season to push three runs over the plate as the Menehune jumped past the 10-run rule that shorted the game following five innings.
The Menehune legacy of the long balls continued as Lynette Perreira opened up the scorebooks with two away, banging into a two-RBI triple in the opening frame.
Capitalizing on Warrior miscues, Menehune speedsters Melissa Moreno and Ashley Mier crossed the plate on a passed ball in the second for a 4-0 bulge.
Kapa‘a answered as Waimea hurler waivered, Kennilyn Nakamura and Moana DeSilva walking.
With one away, Kerryann Kupihea singled to load the bases where a fielder’s choice put Nakamura out of the picture, but the miscue in the play scored DeSilva.
Sandy Pimental followed with an RBI double with another walk to Chasare Labuguen loading the bags again only to have Theresa Taylor thrown out third to first leaving three runners stranded.
Waimea continued to roll in the second contest, taking a 17-6 win to the buses despite a 3-RBI triple by Kapa‘a’s Shantel Wong.
The next KIF game should be pivotal for both Waimea and Kaua‘i as the Red Raiders travel to the Waimea Canyon Park on Wednesday, Jan. 14.
Game time is at 5:30 p.m. for the first pitch.
According to James Kitamura, Waimea High School athletic director, the electrical problems that plagued the park and forced a rescheduling of the start time has been fixed, so the game will revert to its originally scheduled 5:30 p.m. start time.
