NAWILIWILI — Anchor Cove Shopping Center, which was originally developed by James T. Jasper in 1989, has completed an expansion of its original center.
The recently finished renovation of an existing 12,000 square foot building and its connection to the original Anchor Cove, creates a center that is 50 percent larger.
The expanded center includes 56 new parking stalls and parking for three large tour buses. The new parking area was designed with extra large internal driveways so large tours buses can comfortable navigate in and out of the center.
The $700,000 worth of improvements to this Anchor Cove extension creates additional space to accommodate another 15 retail operators.
Retail locations range in size from 300 to 3,000 square feet.
Anchor Cove is currently leasing these spaces and believes that the additional retail spaces will be leased by operators positioning themselves for the future explosion in Cruise Ship days at Kaua‘i’s Nawiliwili Harbor.
Along with being Kaua‘i’s only oceanfront shopping center, Anchor Cove is also the closest (300 yards) retail center to Kaua‘i’s Cruise Ship port.
The overall number of cruise ship days on Kaua‘i will increase by over 35 percent in 2004 (118 days in 2003 to 180 days in 2004).
And the actual amount of “Dockside time”, the hours spent on Kauai, will increase by over 70 percent.
The increased “dockside” time is directly related to Norwegian Cruise Lines “Pride of America” staying overnight on Kauai.
Beginning on July 5, the Pride of America is scheduled to be spending every Monday night on Kaua‘i.
The business impact of the overall increase in Cruise Ship days coupled with increased dockside time spent on Kaua‘i will be dramatic.
Retail shops in the Nawiliwili area that already benefit from Cruise Ship guests, are excited about 2004 forecasted Cruise Ship increases.
“The overnighting of the ‘pride of America’ will enable more time for these passengers to explore Nawiliwili and the retail shops,” said Jasper. “The Norwegian Cruise Lines additional number of cruise ship scheduled to visit Kauai and the increase dockside time will directly affect gross sales for Harbor retailers.
“Anchor Cove retailers can realize daily gross sales increases from 30 percent to 60 percent on cruise ship days vs. non-cruise ship days.”
Beginning in October of 2004, Kauai is scheduled to have a NCL cruise ship on island five out of seven days per week. On Monday and Tuesday, the NCL’s Pride of America, Wednesday, Norwegian Wind and Thursday and Saturday, the Norwegian Sky.
“The increase in cruise ship days on Kaua‘i will be an extremely positive economic force for hundreds of business, on Kaua‘i and will directly support thousands of Kaua‘i’s residents who work in these businesses,” said Jasper.
