A glut of unsold Christmas trees is providing Christmas-tree recyclers with a bonanza this year.
A total of about 1,800 Christmas trees were left over at big box retailers Home Depot, Wal-Mart and other sources.
County of Kaua’i officials are encouraging the public to recycle Christmas trees, which will be shredded and converted into a mulch or compost product by the workers in the County of Kaua’i Department of Public Works.
Trees are being accepted for recycling at the Hanalei, Lihu’e, Kapa’a and Hanapepe transfer stations, which are open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and at the Kekaha Landfill, which is open 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
All locations are open seven days a week, excluding holidays.
Trees may also be taken to Kauai Nursery & Landscaping, which has a drop-off station open seven days a week, 24 hours a day. The drop point is outside the main entrance, located on Kaumuali’i Highway, about one mile west of Puhi.
