The words “May I please have a glass of water?” may soon need to be uttered in order to get water at local restaurants.
Following a request by the state Legislature earlier this year to do so, the Kaua’i Department of Water Board of Water Supply recently adopted a resolution encouraging workers at all Kaua’i food-service establishments to serve water to customers only after customers’ verbal requests.
The state House of Representatives this year passed resolutions requesting water boards on Kaua’i, Maui and the Big Island adopt administrative rules promoting water conservation by requiring restaurant workers to serve water only upon request.
Members of the Kaua’i Board of Water Supply didn’t feel compelled to make the water-conservation mandatory, instead supporting a voluntary initiative.
The proper stewardship of Kaua’i’s potable water resources is critical in order to both sustain this finite resource and preserve it for present and future generations on Kaua’i, said a county DOW spokesperson.
Conservation of fresh water plays an important part in the careful management of this precious resource, she said.
Members of the Kaua’i Board of Water Supply fully support the intent of the House resolutions to promote water conservation efforts by restaurants, and believe that serving water on request only is an appropriate practice for food- service establishments.
Such a practice also raises public awareness about the need for and merits of water conservation, she continued.
At a recent monthly board meeting, the Kaua’i Board of Water Supply voted to pass the water-upon-request-only resolution, and send a copy of it to every Kaua’i restaurant.
