For the eighth year in a row, Free Care Day for needy residents of Kaua’i is being offered by Great Smiles Dental, Pacific Eyewear and Kauai Medical Clinic Footcare.
Free dental, eye and foot-care service is planned on Wednesday, Dec. 24, Christmas Eve, for those who cannot afford to have their urgent needs met, said Dr. Greg Naganuma, whose Great Smiles Dental office is the site of the free dental care.
Patients will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis, from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
In anticipation of a severe flu season, free flu vaccinations were scheduled to be offered with the help of Hawaii Home Infusion (Pharmacist Kevin Glick), and Hawaii Healthcare Professionals (Donna Reeves, RN).
“Recent attempts to obtain the flu vaccine have been unsuccessful because of the national shortage, so we may not be able to offer this service,” said Naganuma.
“There are many people who have urgent needs and cannot afford to have them met,” Naganuma said. “We will try our best to render as much free service to all who request it on Christmas Eve, to the limits of our capacity,” he continued.
“Our staffs are volunteering their time in thanks to the community for allowing us to serve them, and Christmas Eve seems to be a perfect time to show this appreciation,” he said.
Dr. Larry Sherrer of Pacific Eyewear will offer complimentary eye care, and Dr. Tyler Chihara of Kauai Medical Clinic Footcare will offer foot care, from their offices in Kukui Grove Professional Village, where Naganuma’s office is as well.
Though dental, eye, and foot-care services will be provided free of charge, cash donations will be accepted, but are not required. All contributions will be given to officials with The Salvation Army, Naganuma explained.
Examples of services that will be offered are: dental cleanings, exams, denture repairs, tooth removals, nerve treatment and fillings; eye exams, evaluations for cataract, glaucoma, and diabetes, vision testing with free single-vision glasses to those in need; and treatment of foot pain, ingrown toenails, foot ulcerations, warts, fungal nails, trimming corns and calluses, will also be performed.
Susan Budlong from North Shore Dental Laboratory will be contributing free denture repairs.
