The Garden Island and Zonta Club of Kaua’i are again teaming up with the community to try to make the holidays a little happier for those in need.
Every year, community members are asked to make donations to the Zonta/Garden Island Christmas Fund.
With the help of community agencies, Zonta Club members identify families who will not have a merry Christmas without help. Every day from now until Christmas, The Garden Island will publish stories about people who could use some assistance. The names have been changed to protect their privacy, but the stories are all actual case histories of people living on Kaua’i.
For more than 20 years, the community has come through with Kaua’i aloha, although some years, when times are tough for everyone, it hasn’t been easy. If donors could see the smiles on the faces of those they have helped — young and old — they would feel their contributions are well-spent.
Checks and money orders may be sent to Zonta/Garden Island Christmas Fund, P.O. Box 1120, Kapa’a HI 96746. Christmas-Fund organizers hope neighbors continue their traditional generosity, which has helped countless families have a merry Christmas for more than 20 years.

Matthew’s family needs lots of help
Matthew is an infant with many medical problems, and has gone through two constructive surgeries, requiring both his parents to be with him at Straub Clinic and Shriners Hospital in Honolulu. His family would welcome assistance for personal shopping, due to financial situations. Because they need to be with Matthew, both his parents are unable to work. This has been a hardship on them financially, especially since the holiday season is coming up.
A computer could fulfill Sandra’s dream
Sandra is a developmentally disabled teenager who has experienced a recent operation and is recuperating. She has a dream and a goal to become a journalist. She is requesting a computer to fulfill her dream, but her family is not able to afford one at this time.
Clothes and personal items would help Abel
Abel’s father passed away several months ago. Abel (a teenager) is adjusting to that loss. His mom is a single parent raising two boys by herself. His mother is requesting assistance during this holiday season to get some extra clothes and other personal items that they are not able to get due to the family’s financial situation.
Alejandro needs food and clothing
Alejandro, 20, lives with his parents and two adult siblings in a rented house. His parents and siblings work at menial jobs, and also manage to care for and supervise Alejandro, who is totally dependent on them. Food and clothing would benefit this young adult, and lessen some of his financial dependence on them. He is not eligible for Medicaid, Social Security or Food Stamps.
