Shoji named coach of the year
University of Hawai’i head coach Dave Shoji was named West Region Coach of the Year and UH freshman Kanoe Kamana’o was named West Region Freshman of the Year by the Western Athletic Conference who placed five players on the 2003 American Volleyball Coaches Association’s all-West Region, it was announced Thursday in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Three-time WAC Player of the Year Kim Willoughby led the way along with teammates Lily Kahumoku and Kanoe Kamana’o.
Rainbow Wahine senior Lauren Duggins earned honorable mention all-region honors. Willoughby and Kahumoku were both named all-West region for the third time.
Willoughby is currently third in the nation in kills per game, averaging 6.49 kpg. The All-American is also 18th in the nation in hitting percentage and 15th in service aces. Kamana’o is having a stellar freshman campaign, currently 14th in the nation averaging 13.35 assists per game.
Kahumoku was named Most Valuable Player of the WAC Championship and is fourth in the WAC, averaging 5.21 kpg.
Shoji has propelled Hawai’i into the NCAA Region Semifinals for the sixth consecutive season with a 34-1 record. Hawai’i has matched last season’s win total (34) with six returning starters and three AVCA All-Americans on the roster.
The Rainbow Wahine have won 33 straight matches with their only blemish being a loss to USC in the second match of the season.
Shoji was named AVCA All-Region Coach of the Year for the sixth time.
Boys’ tryouts for Kirk Banks soccer Saturday, Dec. 20
Tryouts for the Boys Under 14 Kirk Banks Tournament for AYSO Region 941 is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 20 at Anahola Park from 2:30 to 4 p.m.
Any players wishing to try out for the tournament must bring their own soccer ball.
The Kirk Banks Tournament will be played March 25-28, 2004.

Red Raider alumni host baseball get-together
A Kaua’i High School Alumni Baseball get-together is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 20 starting at 4 p.m. at the Lihu’e Neighborhood Center.
Organizers encourage all Red Raider alumni to come out to the event and share in the potluck and talk story about Kaua’i High School baseball.
