Over 50 people came to pay their respects to Kim Hufft, 41, at a memorial service held at ‘Anini Beach Park Sunday.
Hufft was identified by her boyfriend as the woman found floating near ‘Anini Beach on Saturday, Nov. 29.
The belly dancer, who performed all over Kaua’i, including at the Hyatt Regency Kauai Resort & Spa, Caffe Coco, and the Tahiti Nui, had no surviving relatives, according to her boyfriend, Rick Van Etten.
“She had a big heart and was a good cook,” said Van Etten. “She enjoyed feeding people.”
The body of the North Shore resident, who had made Kaua’i her home for two years, was found floating at Kalihikai, between Kalihiwai Bay and ‘Anini Beach, on Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend.
She was originally from the Los Angeles-area, her boyfriend said.
Assistant Chief Gordon Isoda of Kaua’i Police Department reported that the police are waiting for a toxicology report before classifying the death, said Kaui Tanaka, County of Kaua’i spokeswoman. Tanaka said police expect the results to be available in a couple of weeks from an off-island laboratory.
Hufft, who was found fully-clothed and wearing jewelry, was brought back to shore by beachgoers between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 29, according to Kaua’i Fire Department Battalion Chief Bob Kaden.
She was initially spotted by a visitor driving on ‘Anini Road, and a county dispatcher was called, Kaden said.
There were reports the surf would reach heights of 18 to 20 feet that Saturday morning, and had it not been for bystanders who swam out from shore and brought her body back to shore, Hufft could have been carried out to sea by strong currents, Kaden said.
