When Jessica Sawyer heard the news from her husband Chris, she didn’t know what to say.
“I was in shock,” she said. “I got the call from Chris and I thought he might have been kidding.”
Chris was completely serious about the week vacation to Kaua‘i that the couple had just won.
The Sawyers, who are from Chico, California, received a call from the Island Soap & Candle Company about winning the annual “Tell a Friend” contest.
On Wednesday, the couple began their vacation at 4:22 p.m. as Island Soap officials greeted them. The trip will also serve as the couple’s seventh wedding anniversary.
The Sawyers were interviewed and received a leis as part of the company celebration held at the Lihu‘e Airport.
“We are very excited about the prize,” said Jessica Sawyer. “I always wanted to go to Hawai‘i.”
Initially, the couple didn’t have set plans on what they would do here.
However, they had a few ideas.
“Chris wants to hang-glide and I would like to snorkel and maybe hike,” said Jessica Sawyer.
“We have family that have vacationed here and they gave us information about a few things to do.”
The Island Soap company was established in 1984 and is the only one of its kind in the state. The business was established with the intention of “re-creating the ancient art of soap making.”
“We now manufacture a full line of natural Hawai‘ian Island Botanical Products, beeswax candles and other gift items,” said the owners of the store. “Our products are all made on Kaua‘i and are found in sundry and fine gift shops throughout Hawai‘i.”
