Mahalo Nui, Kehaulani Kekua & Katherine Dell, for your wonderful letters of 11/17/03. I too was very upset when I read about the shark that was killed that had absolutely nothing to do with the attack. When my husband, Sam, heard about it, all he wanted to know was, “What are they going to do, kill every shark till they find the right one?”
This world belongs to every living thing on this planet & we are not the superior being. We’re supposed to be the smartest, but sometimes that remains to be seen. Instead of saving we are destroying. As Kehaulani says, ask permission first & mahalo when you leave. Go ahead, laugh, but you are entering their domain & they allow it. Please show, respect & love for everyone & thing & maybe our world that we take so much for granted will survive.
Remember, if you kill off all the sharks it will upset the apple cart. There is a reason for every living thing.

In view of the attention being paid to the plight of the homeless, I am amazed that the County of Kauai doesn’t erect a homeless shelter. It could be done quite inexpensively , and at the same time be very secure and very safe for those homeless people who truly need and want help.
A tent type facility could be erected inclosed by a chain link fence , perhaps near the detention facility on Kuhio Hi-way. This would be similar to what our military personnel live in when they are on assignment in foreign service. A military style food service could be provided and military type cots would also used which would be better than sleeping on the sand at the beach. Sanitary facilities would be included which would provide showers as well as toilets.
A security feature would be that all people wishing to use the shelter would be required to be in by some reasonable hour, perhaps 10pm, and there would be some one to check to make sure that no drugs and no weapons came into the shelter.
It should be near bus service so that those that work could get to and from work. And those looking for work could get to and from their job hunting places. A free bus service could be provided .
I’m sure that hotels , restaurants , and other business’ would be glad to help fund such an operation.
But more importantly , the homeless who truly want a safe, secure, clean place to live while they get their lives back in order would appreciate such a simple, inexpensive to provide shelter.
