LIHU‘E — Waimea Funny Money coach Ken Morikawa told his boys, “We didn’t allow them to score. They’re the top team from the Eastside, and you boys didn’t allow them to score.”
The scenario took place as the regulation time ran out on a 0-0 stalemate in the opening game of the Wil Veeck Soccer Tournament, Day Two.
Morikawa said, “Our goal was to get here (the Wil Veeck)! We worked all season to be able to get here.”
But, the efforts of Wailua goalie Alex LaMadrid would take its toll on the peach-jersied Funny Money as the goalie successfully stopped kicks from Cody Nishek, Jordan Kitabayashi and KJ Morikawa in the shootout.
The Cobra’s boots ran loud as Evan Ka‘ahea started the shootoff on a goal followed by LaMadrid, and Levi Miyashiro sealing the 1 – 0 win.
Tyler Dora notched two goals to lead Kilauea to a 4 – 1 win over the Lihu‘e A in the second game of the evening.
Kyle Galtes and Eli Souza each added a goal for Kilauea while Gerry Rayray notched the Lihu‘a goal on a header of a Michael Fujikawa corner kick.
Chance Bukoski finished the night with a hat trick (three goals) to lead Kapa‘a Motiv8 (U14-B) to a 5 – -0 shutout over the defensive efforts of Lihu‘e Ho‘oikaiki in the evening’s finale.
Bukoski notched goals in the first, second, and final quarters to lead Motiv8 who also got a goal from Caleb Sarsona in the second quarter, and Tyler Tangelder, who scored in the third frame.
