Kapahi author Evelyn Cook will be signing her new book, “100 Years of Healing — The Legacy of a Kauai Missionary Doctor,” at Borders Books Music & Cafe this Saturday, Nov. 8, at 2 p.m.
The book explores the life of Dr. James W. Smith and his descendants, collectively known as the Smith-Waterhouse family of Koloa.
Smith arrived in Koloa in 1842, and remained until his death in 1887. His son Jared Smith was also a physician in Koloa, as was his grandson, A.H. Waterhouse.
A review of “100 Years of Healing” in The Honolulu Advertiser stated, “the book tackles thorny issues, and makes some controversial arguments — that missionaries have been misrepresented as ‘dour, sexually repressed, land-stealing opportunists,’ and that the cause of the 1893 overthrow lay in Hawaiian misrule.”
The Advertiser review also stated that “the book is a well-written exploration of incidents in the lives of the Smith-Waterhouse family, illustrating through one clan the significant themes in Hawai‘i history.”
Cook is also author of “West Kauai’s Plantation Heritage,” and co-author of the best-selling “With Sam Choy, Cooking from the Heart.”
