LIHU‘E — Waimea High School boys will represent the KIF at the upcoming HHSAA state volleyball championships after sweeping the Kaua‘i Red Raiders 25-12, 25-12 Wednesday night.
The Menehune got one of their better team play of the season as the victory came behind a combined effort with Casey Kaohelaulii and Jeremy McDown shutting down the middle, Kaohelaulii extending his coverage to pop an occasional hit from the outside.
John Karratti, Josh Cabral, Erwin Wright, and Bryan Hayashi got their shots in on the win, and when Kamu Kawaihalau was brought in to serve in game two, the Menehune crowd erupted in cheer.
Kawaihalau, who played as a Red Raider in the 2002 season, transferred to Waimea this year, but was sidelined with injuries, coach Bobby Kamakele saying the outside hitter would be cleared Monday, a school day past the regular KIF season.
Leading 16-10, Kawaihalau’s serve was dished back by a strong kill by Futi Tavana down the sideline for a Kaua‘i point and sideout.
Tavana got help from Garrett Sakimae, Justin McSheehy, and Micah Young, but even the prescense of Kevin Downing’s grandmother from Ohio could not get the blocking going, the usual Jonathan Smith-led attack dampened by the outside rain.
Kaua‘i took the girls’ title with a win over Waimea in the regular season.
