The 27th annual North Shore Menehune Surfing Competitions were held Oct. 18 – 19 at Haleiwa Beach on O‘ahu. Age divisions ranged from 6 and under to ages 11-12. There was long boarding and short boarding for boys and girls. Competitors rode waves that were 3-4 feet (6-8 ft. face).
Local participants were Kaikea Elias, Dylan Goodale and Alex, Travis and Koa Smith, all of Kilauea. All had top-notch performances. Koa Smith finished first in the 7-8 year old boys’ short board division winning a custom made surfboard from Surf and Sea. Alex Smith and Dylan Goodale finished third and fourth respectfully, in the 11-12-year-old boys’, short board division. Travis Smith won a bike and a skateboard in the Contest drawing.
The trophies in the 7-12 divisions were designed by Sand Flea wire sculptures and represented a “flea” in selected surfing poses on a wave.
Bags of goodies were donated by Haleiwa merchants including surf boards, watches, clothes, meals and new bicycles to name a few.
Custom boards were given to first place finishers. One name selected in the contest drawing stated he already had a bike so he asked for another name to be chosen. As for the custom boards, most of the winners are sponsored by surf board companies and if they were given a custom board they handed it down to the one place winner that was not sponsored.
The great sportsmanship in and out of the water made it was a fantastic event. Everyone took great pride in these young athletes.
