KAPA‘A — “When was the last time this happened?” an excited Manny Henriques asked as the Bernice Hundley Gym exploded when the Kapa‘a High School girls took their second game 25-22 over Waimea on Wednesday night.
Waimea opened a lead early in game one, but a Waimea lift error saw the contest deadlock at 15-15.
From that point, Kapa‘a tied the contest three times before putting away the game behind Menehune errors and a key block from Warrior Jennifer Lindsey in game one.
Game two saw Kapa‘a women nipping at the Menehune’s heels throughout the contest before Amniesty Ragsac pulled Kapa‘a ahead for good with a kill down the line for point 8.
The Menehune managed to tie the contest three more times in game two before succumbing to a trio of errors that gave the outing to Kapa‘a.
Critical to Kapa‘a’s win was the combined power serving of Ragsac along with key hits and blocks from Lindsey and Poerava Gantt.
The Waimea girls’ loss sets up a “must-win” situation Saturday night when the Menehune host the Kaua‘i Red Raiders. A Waimea win will result in a three-way tie for the first round with each team holding a 2-2 record. A Kaua‘i win will give them a 3-1 advantage.
Earlier in the night, Jeremy McDown’s return to the court helped Waimea take their contest in three, 25-15, 21-25, 25-11 as McDown combined with Casey Kaohelaulii to shut down the middle.
Joshua Cabral led the hitters who beat out the tandem blocking efforts led by Ryan Cram and Billy Toy.
Cabral got help from John Karratti, Bryan Hayashi, and Erwin Wright with Hayashi and Wright also doing a good job on outside blocks as well as digs from the back.
Kapa‘a battled back in the second game, jockeying for the lead through the game, but it was a key Toy hit for point 24 followed by a Cram ace for the final point forcing game three.
Waimea capitalized on Kapa‘a’s miscues to build the lead with Cabral locking up the game.
Following the Wednesday night win, Waimea shares the lead with Kaua‘i, each team holding a 2-1 record going into Saturday night’s matchup at the Clem Gomes. A win by either team will give them the first round advantage.
JV games saw another split as the Waimea women controlled Kapa‘a 25-14, 25-9, and the Kapa‘a JV boys took Waimea 25-13, 25-21.
Saturday’s games will be at the Clem Gomes Gym at Waimea High School with games starting no earlier than 3, 4, 5:30, and 6:45 p.m.
