Kalawakua, coached by Paul Williams of Kapa‘a, took the title for the first Kaua‘i Institute of Soccer, Inc. tournament, Labor Day weekend at Kapa‘a Beach Park.
En route to the title, Kalawakua was involved in six rigorous games including a contest by the Hooligans, who gave Kalawakua a run for the title during the playoffs — Kalawakua advanced following a two-round penalty shootout.
Williams, Kalawakua’s goalie, made a spectacular save on the 29th shot.
The Flying Hawaiians proved to be Kalawakua’s major challenge throughout the tournament, taking the lead in the championship game on an early goal by James Topper.
Tracey Long deadlocked the contest for Kalawakua late in the first half on a goal from the outside with Mike Birchett nailing the win in the final five minutes of play.
Outstanding player awards were presented to Crissy Marti for the most goals scored and Williams for the most goals saved.
The tournament would not have been a reality had it not been for businesses in the community that supported the event, KIS organizers said. They include Two Frogs Hugging, Chicks Who Rip, The Shack, Coconuts, Cost-U-Less, Longs Drugs, Puhi Store, Wasabi’s, The Bull Shed, and the Wine Garden.
Based on the success of this tournament, KIS organizers are already planning future tournaments.
