Junior Lifeguard Program was great learning experience
This year, I took part in the Junior Lifeguard Program which is a free program that teaches teens (ages 13-17) the basics about ocean safety, first aid, injury prevention and ocean awareness. I enjoyed my week of training at Salt Pond so much, I followed the program to Poipu and Kalapaki. I think this is a valuable program because it teaches the youth about the dangers and precautions which should be considered when around the ocean. Because Kauai is surrounded by water, it is important for the youth to recognize the potential dangers of the ocean. In addition to learning new skills, this program enabled me to make friends from different areas of this island.
I would like to thank the County of Kauai Fire Department’s Ocean Safety Bureau and the Hawaiian Lifeguard Association for co-sponsoring this free program. Thank you to all the lifeguards who trained us in this program, especially Aaron Habermann, for all the time and effort he put into coordinating this event. I would also like to thank the other sponsors and businesses who made it possible for us to compete in the state championships on Oahu.
I would like to extend a special thank you to all the older Jr. Lifeguards, especially Kaimi Kaneholani and Savase Brede, who helped me improve my technique in the various events. I really appreciated their advice and encouragement.
In my opinion, this is a great learning experience and I encourage all teens to enroll in this program next summer.
