Ice crisis focus of legislative committee meeting tonight

LIHU‘E — Members of the Joint House Senate Task Force on Ice and Drug Abatement are scheduled to conduct on-site hearings tonight at 6 p.m. in the Kaua‘i County Council chambers in the historic Kaua‘i Count Building on Rice Street.

Leading community officials with a wide range of drug abuse and recovery experience are scheduled to testify.

Earlier in the day the committee is set to visit the Kaua‘i Community Correctional Center to observe the workings of Lifetime Stand, a prison rehabilitation program that stresses work ethic, perseverance, discipline and personal responsibility.

The committee is considering the urgent need for additional treatment and rehabilitation facilities throughout the state.

The Honolulu medical examiners office reports deaths among crystal methamphetamine users have quadrupled in the past decade to a record 62 fatalities last year. Other statistics suggest frightening trends in child abuse and teenage drug use related to drug use.

The 6 p.m. committee hearing is open to the public.
