KALAPAKI — The Kawakami family celebrated the 10th Anniversary of the Richard Kawakami Memorial Golf Tournament Friday morning at the Kauai Lagoons Mokihana Course with a shotgun start featuring many sponsors and vendors flying in from off-island to participate in the tournament that benefits the Kauai Hospice and numerous youth organizations on the island.
This year’s proceeds totalling $28,000 was broken down to include $10,000 going to the Kauai Hospice program with $4,000 awarded to the DARE drug resistance program, the Kauai Special Olympics, and the Kauai Junior Golf program.
Awards of $3,000 were presented to Hale Opio and the Frank DeLima Foundation.
Over its ten-year history, the Richard Kawakami tournament which draws on support from the Big Save, Inc. ohana, the Kauai Kookie Company, and numerous community organizations, has grown to become one of the largest tournaments on the island, and one of the more prestigious ones in the state.
Golfers are treated to special prizes provided by community businesses, and there is no lack of refreshments around the course as well as at the banquet following the day of golf. The golf tournament has awarded $228,000 to Kauai Hospice and numerous community youth organizations over
its ten-year run.
