The Lihu‘e Lightning girls 10 and under soccer team completed its 2003 KSA undefeated season with a first-place finish at “The Hawaii Cup” held recently on Mau‘i.
It was the 17th annual Hawaii Cup featuring 84 teams from Hawaii and the mainland.
The championship game pitted two Kaua‘i teams against one another. Lihu‘e and Motiv8 Po‘okela fought to a scoreless draw in the first half of action.
During the second half, Kayla Perez started the scoring for the Lightning, who won the game 2-0, with an assist from Malia Kagawa. The scoring ended a few minutes later with a run on the right side from Brianne Hornos as she buried the ball to the back of the net.
The Lightning’s defense limited Po‘okela’s offense with relentless pressure lead by sweepers Kelsey Cadiente, Sierra Mayer and fullbacks, Teal Basquez, Dayna Fujii, Kayla Shim and goalie Saryna Garcia.
The team also featured speedy forward, Jazzy Curtis.
The Lightning was formed four years ago by coaches Robert Shim and Kaleo Perez. It has won the KSA title in 2000, ‘01 and ‘03. The 2003 season has been Lihu‘e’s best with a high-powered offense and a tough defense all season. The Lightning outscored opponents 73-5.
