LIHU‘E — Anglers wishing to participate in the Easter Seals Aloha shoreline fishing tournament can sign up now for the tournament which begins on August 8 starting at 5 p.m. and ending on August 10 at 10 a.m. with the weigh-in taking place at the Lihu‘e Neighborhood Center starting at 10 until 11:30 a.m.
For 26 years, the Easter Seals in cooperation with the Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative, the Gas Company, and a large following of community businesses and agencies has hosted the popular tournament that attracted families to the weigh-in, but no more as Shane Tokita, the Easter Seals director announced that this will be the final tournament.
Previous tournaments shuttled between the Vidinha Stadium, the Gas Company parking lot, Kukui Grove Park and Pavilion, and finally settling in at the Rice Shopping Center as weigh-in gathering sites that were always embelished with live announcements courtesy of Reggie Deroos of KUAI radio, an exhibit of classic fishing gear by Jack Gushiken, and in more recent times, a keiki activity station courtesy of Jean Souza and the National Humpback Whale Sanctuary.
Anglers and their families could also get information on marine environment and fishing from volunteers who turned out from the Department of Land and Natural Resources.
The popular stop on the annual fishing calendar was even video-taped for airing on the JK Show.
Participation in this Aloha tournament requires a donation of $25 at any of the island wide network of fishing supply outlets including Waipouli Variety, Lihu‘e Fishing Supply, Kaua‘i Rainbow Paint Supply, The Gas Company, and the Easter Seals office on Aikahi Street in Lihu‘e.
A special Children’s category is also added to this year’s tournament courtesy of the Rice Shopping Center with entry set at a $10 donation.
Entry tickets will be available up until 5 p.m. August 8 and entitles the angler entry into the tournament as well as lunch at the weigh-in on Sunday.
The seven categories for this year’s tournament include Ulua (over 10 pounds), Papio (10 pounds and under), Oio, Other Ocean Fish Over 10 pounds, Other Ocean Fish 10 pounds and under, Freshwater, and Women (Ocean Fish).
Tokita said that this year’s finale will also be filled with exhibits, games, and other family activities at the weigh-in with the food booth opening at 10 a.m. signalling the start of weigh-in.
